11th & POLK IN DOWNTOWN AMARILLO
THE LOCATION
The Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial will be constructed in the heart of the region at the northwest corner of 11th & Polk in downtown Amarillo next to the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. The site is easily accessible, tranquil, and distinct. Tolling church bells from nearby churches accentuate the contemplative atmosphere at the site. THE HISTORY
The site of the future Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial served as Amarillo's first downtown vest pocket park dating back to the mid-1970s. Pocket parks are small areas, usually inserted into interstitial spaces to provide an open space experience or respite from a city. The original vest pocket park at 11th and Polk included a water fountain, paving the way for the Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial to feature water that will cascade behind each fallen first responder's name.

THE LEASE
Friends of AJ Swope, the 501(c)3 Texas Nonprofit spearheading the Memorial project fundraising and construction, signed a lease agreement with the City of Amarillo in August of 2022. The City graciously gave the Nonprofit a $ 1-a-year lease in perpetuity.
