William Richard "Ricky" Reed
Paramedic
Stratford EMS

End of Watch: December 13, 2020

William Richard “Ricky” Reed dedicated his life to serving others. Whether responding to medical emergencies, leading his hometown, searching for downed aircraft, or helping neighbors in need, Ricky embodied the spirit of selfless service that defines the Texas Panhandle.

Born on July 13, 1958, in Dumas, Texas, Ricky was raised in Stratford, where he graduated High School in 1976. He went on to attend Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanized Agriculture in 1980. That same era saw him earn his private pilot's license and join the Civil Air Patrol, participating in search-and-rescue efforts for missing aircraft.

In 1984, Ricky answered another calling when he entered emergency medical services. Over the next 36 years, he served as a paramedic, providing lifesaving care to generations of Panhandle residents. His calm demeanor, knowledge, and compassion made him a trusted presence during some of life's most difficult moments.

Beyond EMS, Ricky returned to Stratford after college and joined his father, mother, and brother in establishing Bill Reed & Sons on December 1, 1982. The family farming operation became one of the area's most respected agricultural enterprises.

Ricky's love for Stratford extended far beyond his professional life. He devoted countless hours to civic service, believing strongly in giving back to the community that had given him so much. He served on the Stratford School Board, Stratford City Council, and as the Stratford Mayor for 12 years.

His leadership helped shape the future of the city, and his influence can still be felt throughout the community he loved so deeply.

Of all his accomplishments, Ricky considered his greatest achievement to be his role as husband, father, and family patriarch. Those who knew him remember a man who led through example, treated others with respect, and approached life with humility and purpose.
